Sheriff's Office Offers Tips to Safeguard Gifts and Property

12/26/2018

Following the Christmas Holiday, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office wants to encourage residents to take easy, but important steps to safe guard their new belongings.

“There are several things you can do to help reduce the likelihood of theft, and also assist law enforcement should items become stolen,” according to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

“As you unpack your gifts, it’s important to break down the boxes before taking them out to the curb, so they aren’t advertising items in your home to potential thieves as they pass by.”

“Another easy thing to do, which significantly aids law enforcement as they try to locate and recover stolen property, is to take photographs.  It doesn’t take much time to snap a couple of pictures of items, including serial numbers, so you have them should you need them.  It’s also important not to forget to photograph jewelry and tools, which may be hard to describe or distinguish,” continued Sheriff Groves.

“Finally, the best way to thwart would be thieves, is to be vigilant, watch out for one another and call law enforcement if you see suspicious activity in your neighborhoods,” concluded Sheriff Groves.
