Two Snagged in Bait Shop Raid

After a month’s long investigation into suspected methamphetamine sales, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office raided the Lightning Creek Bait and Tackle at 12384 NW Sherman City Road in rural northwest Cherokee County, at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday, July 18.

During the course of the search, investigators seized suspected methamphetamine, marijuana and paraphernalia items consistent with drug sales.

Danny “Butch” Smith, 32, and 25 year-old Casey Gudde, were arrested and transported to the Cherokee County Jail, where they are being held on allegations of Distributing Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana and Aggravated Child Endangerment.

Two children, ages 5 and 6, were taken into protective custody.

“Drug sales are an inherently dangerous activity,” stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.  “In this particular case, we not only believe that type of criminal activity was occurring on the property when the two children taken into protective custody yesterday were present, but we also believe drug transactions taking place out of the business may have placed unsuspecting families in unnecessary danger,” concluded Sheriff Groves.

Bond on both suspects has been set at $45,500.00 and formal charges are expected to be filed by the Cherokee County Attorney’s Office later this week.
