Grenade Found Outside of Baxter Springs Monday

06/07/2016

On June 6, 2016, at approximately 5:00 p.m., authorities were dispatched to an area west of Baxter Springs on 19th Street, where a building was being cleaned out in preparation for an upcoming auction.

A grenade was discovered and authorities were notified. Upon the arrival of Sheriff’s Deputies, the device was confirmed and the area secured. A bomb squad with the Kansas Highway Patrol responded, transported the device to the Baxter Springs dump on West 12th Street and detonated it.

The device was light and bomb techs were unable to confirm that it was live, but detonated it anyway, for safety sake.

In addition to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol, the Baxter Springs Fire Department and Ambulance Service were on standby.
