Baxter Springs Drug Ring Case Nets Two More

Since July 1st, 2013, narcotics related search warrants have been executed in Baxter Springs, leading to the discovery of suspected methamphetamine labs, and a total of 11 suspects being taken into custody on various charges related to methamphetamine manufacturing and distribution.

The joint investigation is being conducted by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Southeast Kansas Drug Enforcement Task Force and the Baxter Springs Police Department.

Cherokee County Attorney Nathan Coleman recently filed charges on two additional suspects, Brian E. Smith, 29, of Baxter Springs and Michelle Yates, 31, of Columbus in connection to the case.

Smith was taken into custody on July 25th, 2013, on charges of Manufacture of Methamphetamine, Possession of Precursor Chemicals with Intent to Manufacture Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. 

Smith remains in the Cherokee County Jail in lieu of $50,000.00 bond.

Yates was taken into custody on July 31st, 2013 on charges of Conspiracy to Manufacture Methamphetamine, Manufacture of Methamphetamine, Possession of Precursor Chemicals with Intent to Manufacture Methamphetamine and Distribution of Precursor Chemicals.

Yates also remains in custody in the Cherokee County Jail in lieu of $50,000.00 bond.

All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.

The investigation remains ongoing and additional arrests are anticipated.
