As families start to put away recently received gifts, Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves is providing some quick and easy tips to help keep them secure.

"Law enforcement encourages the breaking down of boxes rather than just stacking them near the curb for pickup by sanitation workers where they can serve to display what items may be found inside the home to would-be thieves who drive by," according to Sheriff Groves

"Additionally, property owners are encouraged to take a quick picture of valuable items, such as firearms (including serial numbers), tools and jewelry. Doing so will significantly aid law enforcement in recovering the items should they be later stolen."

"Finally, we recommend removing valuables from vehicles, especially at night, and making sure the windows are up and doors are locked.  Doing this dramatically decreases the likelihood of someone rummaging through a vehicle," concluded Sheriff Groves.
