The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office will be joining other law enforcement agencies across the state and region in the New Year's Taking Down DUI traffic enforcement campaign December 26th through January 2nd.

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, the New Year's Holiday outranks most other holidays in the number of crashes where at least one of the drivers is impaired by alcohol and/or other drugs.

"Members of our agency and the law enforcement community want to ensure our area roadways are safe for everyone as they travel during the New Year Holiday period," stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves in announcing the agency participation.

"To do so, motorists will notice a significant increase in patrols on both highways and secondary roads as we enter 2024. Law enforcement participating in the enforcement campaign will be specifically looking for those who choose to be unsafe by driving impaired, driving while distracted, driving at unsafe speeds, and driving while unsecured by a safety belt," concluded Sheriff Groves.

Costs associated with the enforcement campaign are provided through a grant awarded by the Kansas Department of Transportation.
